Wellington Shire Council is Victoria's third largest municipality, covering an area of 10,924 square kilometres and is home to 46,000 residents spread across more than 30 different communities. Wellington Shire Council has a diverse environment ranging from the Coast with its frontage to Bass Strait with the 90 Mile Beach and Gippsland Lakes, floodplains of the Macalister Irrigation District, cool temperate rainforest of the Strzelecki Ranges and Mountains above 1500m in height in the northern part of the Shire. Extreme weather events are a normal part of Wellington Shire life and in the past 5 years Council has responded to 15 declared disaster events including Wind, Floods, Bushfires, Landslides, Earthquakes and High Tide inundation.
This presentation will focus on how Wellington Shire Council has reacted to these events in order to assist the affected communities.
