Local government asset management increasingly demands scalable, efficient systems capable of supporting lifecycle planning, maintenance optimisation, and robust record-keeping across diverse infrastructure types. In late 2024, the City of Greater Dandenong commenced deployment of the Asset Vision platform - including its AutoPilot+AI inspection module together with the broader Asset Vision Enterprise work-management and asset register functionalities - to modernise how it manages roads, footpaths, drainage, open spaces and associated infrastructure. This presentation will describe the technical and operational journey, and how integrated data and workflow management has transformed the council’s asset operations.
The project began with automated, vehicle-mounted inspections: AutoPilot enabled continuous, georeferenced visual data capture across the full road and footpath network during routine council-vehicle patrols. Each inspection generates rich data including (GPS location, chainage, direction, timestamped imagery, metadata), forming a consistent corridor-level condition dataset. Crucially, the system enables users to quickly triage potential AI defects to generate defects jobs into the council’s work-order and asset-management workflows - eliminating delays and reducing the reliance on manual data transfer.
Once defects are logged, the broader Asset Vision platform supports work-planning, scheduling, resource allocation, and historical record-keeping. The unified system ensures field staff and office-based asset teams access the same live data, improving coordination and reducing duplication. This integration supports lifecycle-based maintenance strategies: condition data informs risk-based prioritisation, renewal scheduling, and capital works planning across all asset classes, not just roads.
Early outcomes include substantially increased inspection coverage per month, faster defect-to-repair response times, improved transparency and auditability of maintenance history, and more defensible data for long-term renewal budgeting. The platform also enhances safety by reducing the need for manual inspections in hazardous conditions, and supports compliance with reporting and regulatory obligations.
